Background: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a rapidly increasing demand for healthcare in hospitals and intensive care units worldwide. COVID-19 patients frequently develop a procoagulative state as a result of virus-induced endothelial dysfunction, cytokine storm, and complement cascade hyperactivation. The risk of thrombosis appears to be directly related to disease severity and worsens patients' prognoses, necessitating the use of anticoagulants.

Aims: The study aims to analyze the relationship between length of hospital stay (LOS) and anticoagulant use in patients with moderate COVID-19.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study on patients diagnosed with moderate COVID-19 at Prof. dr. R. D. Kandou General Hospital. The sampling method was consecutive sampling. Data including the LOS and anticoagulant use were obtained from medical records. Characteristic data including the subject’s age and sex were also obtained. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test as the data were not normally distributed. The p-value of 0.05 was considered significant.

Results: A total of 499 research subjects were included in the study, most of whom were males (54,7%) with an average age of 53,65 years. The LOS data was skewed and violated the normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov p < 0.001) despite being homogeneous (Levene’s test, p = 0.799). Mann-Whitney U test showed a statistically significant difference in mean LOS between moderate COVID-19 patients with and without anticoagulant use (p < 0.001).

Conclusion(s): The study concluded that there was a significant relationship between LOS and anticoagulant use in patients with moderate COVID-19. This study highlights the importance of analyzing LOS as a relevant endpoint, in order to prevent the disease progression and the use of anticoagulants.
