PB0043 - Hypercoagulable state and mortality in ICU patients during 2020-2022: A Single Centre Report

Background: Most of the critical patients in the ICU develop a hypercoagulable state due to various underlying diseases. The hypercoagulable state itself is defined by exaggerated coagulation in the absence of bleeding. Patients with this condition are at risk of developing arterial or venous thrombosis that could worsen their prognosis.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the state of hypercoagulability found in critical ICU patients with their mortality.

Methods: This is a retrospective study, to study the hypercoagulable state and mortality in Murni Teguh Memorial Hospital ICU patients within 2020-2022. The hypercoagulable state was defined by an elevated D-dimer level.

Results: There was a total of 1949 cases, with leading cardiovascular at 991 cases (50.6%), mortality at 28.3%, hypercoagulability at 99.2%, the second most neurology diseases at 262 cases (13.4%), mortality at 87.7%, hypercoagulability 96.2%, followed by pulmonary diseases 153 cases (7.9%), mortality 88.9%, hypercoagulability 86.9%. There is found a statistically significant relationship between hypercoagulability and mortality (p < 0.0001)

Conclusion(s): Hypercoagulability plays an important role in determining the survival of critical ICU patients. Therefore it is important to take extra attention to the level of D-dimer as one of the prognosis factors and there needs to be more attention to improve the patient's prognosis.
