    PB0493 - Top 10 VTE Research Priorities of Patients and Clinicians: Clot Top 10 Priorities Results

    Background: Research driven by industry and academia may not always align with the priorities of patients and clinicians. This results in missed opportunities to ensure that research is needed and used by patients and clinicians daily.

    Aims: The objective of the venous thromboembolism (VTE) priority-setting partnership, Clot Top 10, was to identify and prioritize unanswered questions and evidence uncertainties for future VTE research.

    Methods: The methods of the James Lind Alliance were followed to gather research priorities from patients (including caregivers and family) and clinicians across Canada. An initial online survey requested that participants list their top 3 questions to be addressed by VTE research. A review of clinical practice guidelines for evidence uncertainties was also performed. Both results were combined and grouped into summary priority statements, then recirculated for patients and clinicians to select their most important priorities. Next, the interim survey results were brought to a final consensus workshop. The workshop included an equal number of patient and clinician participants who met over two days to achieve a consensus on ranked research priorities.

    Results: 229 patients and clinicians responded to the initial survey, which, combined with clinical practice guidelines, resulted in 1019 responses that were grouped into 54 summary questions. 72 patients and clinicians completed a second interim prioritization survey, which resulted in selecting 18 shortlisted research priorities. The final workshop included 26 participants from across Canada, chosen to represent diverse personal and professional backgrounds. At the workshop, a rank-order list of the top 10 research priorities was chosen by consensus (Figure 1).

    Conclusion(s): This James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership identified a list of VTE research priorities that patients and clinicians identified as the highest priority. This top 10 list will be used to direct future VTE research, and funding agencies should be encouraged to prioritize funding to research addressing these priorities.
