    PB1455 - Incidence of recurrence and bleeding rates in isolated superficial vein thrombosis. Findings from the TROLL registry.

    Background: Isolated superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) is a common event, but data on long-term outcomes after SVT are limited.

    Aims: We aimed to determine the long-term incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), as well as 45 days incidence of bleeding during anticoagulant treatment, in patients with SVT in the lower extremities.

    Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2021, 245 patients with first-time SVT in the lower extremities without previous VTE or active cancer and treated with anticoagulants were identified from The Venous Thrombosis Registry in ØstfOLd HospitaL (TROLL), in Norway. We estimated the cumulative incidences of major bleeding during 45 days of treatment and VTE events after cessation of anticoagulant treatment in patients with SVT. Participants who provided informed written consent for participation and deceased patients were included (for deceased patients consent was waived by the ethics committee).

    Results: Median age was 59 years (IQR 47-71); 133 (54%) were women. The SVT was located in the saphenous veins in 152 patients (62%), while 93 (38%) had SVT in other superficial veins. Median duration of treatment was 45 days (IQR 44.0-57.5). The majority were treated with Rivaroxaban (67%) and 83% of these received a dose of 10 mg OD. 29% were treated with low-molecular weight heparin. The overall 45 days cumulative incidence of major bleeding was 0.4% (95% CI 0.06-4.30). In analyses restricted to Rivaroxaban there were no major bleedings. The 1- and 5-year cumulative incidences of VTE were 4.7% (95% CI: 2.4%-8.3%) and 14.7% (95% CI: 10.1%-21.1%), respectively. Of the VTEs, 15 (46%) were pulmonary embolisms and 12 (38%) were proximal deep vein thrombosis.

    Conclusion(s): Incidence of VTE after SVT is relatively high with low major bleeding rates.
