Esther Lutgens did an MD/PhD program at the University of Maastricht (the Netherlands, 1994-2001), followed by 2 post-doctoral fellowships at Harvard University in Boston, MA, with Prof. Peter Libby, and at Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH, with Prof. Michael Simons.
After her return to the Netherlands in 2004, she set up the laboratory on ‘Experimental Vascular Immunopathology’ within the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), and in 2011, she moved to the Amsterdam University Medical Center, where she was appointed as a full professor. In 2008, she opened a 2nd laboratory first at the Rheinisch Westfalische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen and later within the ‘Institute for Cardiovascular Prevention’ (Ludwig Maximilian’s University (LMU), Munich), both headed by Prof. Christian Weber. She was able to obtain many grants, including the prestigious, veni – vidi- vici NWO career development grants, and the Dutch Heart Foundation Established Investigator grant. In 2016, she was awarded the J. Hoeg award from the American Heart Association for basic science and clinical research, in 2018 she received the outstanding achievement award for basic science from the European Society of Cardiology, and in 2020 the ‘AHA recognition award for Arteriosclerosis’. In 2016, Esther also received an ERC (European Research Council) consolidator grant. She is part of many consortia, including REPROGRAM (horizon 2020), GENIUS (CVON) and CRC1123 (DFG). Since November 2021, she moved to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA, where she leads the Experimental CardioVascular Immunology Laboratory, within the department of Cardiovascular Medicine.
The focus of her laboratory is vascular immunology, and she is especially interested in how co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory molecules, such as CD40(L) and GITR master cell-cell interactions and mediate inflammation during atherosclerosis.
