Ruben Bierings is a Group Leader and Principal Investigator at the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, Netherlands. Following training in the labs of dr. Jan van Mourik and dr. Jan Voorberg at Sanquin Research in Amsterdam, he obtained his PhD from the University of Utrecht for his work on storage and secretion of Von Willebrand factor. As a CDF postdoctoral fellow in the lab of dr. Matthew Hannah and dr. Tom Carter at the National Institute for Medical Research in London (UK) he studied the role of Rab GTPases and SNARE proteins in formation and exocytosis of Weibel-Palade bodies in endothelial cells.
The Bierings lab focusses on how endothelial cells and platelets control secretion of hemostatic proteins in response to vascular injury. By studying these processes in cellular models derived from patients his group aims to understand how defects in these systems can lead to bleeding abnormalities. Since 2021 he also serves as a co-chair of the ISTH SSC on Vascular Biology.
