Mr Huw Rowswell, consultant nurse thrombosis University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust UK. Huw worked in critical care and respiratory medicine in London before relocating to University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust in 2000. Working firstly as a charge nurse in critical care and then as a night practitioner. He began working in thrombosis and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in 2010 coinciding with the publication of guidance from NICE on the prevention of VTE in hospitalised patients and Plymouth becoming a national VTE exemplar centre. The role includes root cause analysis, on hospital acquired VTE (HAT) which over ten years has shown significant reductions in both total HAT cases but also events associated with inappropriate prevention. Also reviewing anticoagulation prescribing for VTE across the hospital to ensure this is safe and appropriate. He is also involved in patient thrombosis clinics looking at duration of anticoagulation treatment after 3 to 6 months treatment. He have published several articles, looking at VTE outcome data and presented this data both nationally and internationally and completed a Masters with a dissertation on VTE in cardiac surgery comparing emergency with planned admissions. He is the UK nursing lead for the all China nursing VTE early warning alliance, a BSH ordinary trustee, vice chair ISTH nursing forum and the chair of the Clinical Leaders of Thrombosis.
