Dr. Nadine Müller-Calleja (PhD) studies biomedicine and is currently senior scientist at the University Medical Center of the Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany. In addition to her diagnostic work at the Institute of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, her research focuses on basic immunology, in particular on the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases leading to thrombogenic disorders. The main focus is on deciphering the pathogenic mechanisms causing the development of antiphospholipid syndrome. Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disorder clinically characterized by thromboembolic events and/or pregnancy morbidity in women and triggered by antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). These aPL are a heterogeneous group of autoantibodies that can be divided into lipid-reactive and protein cofactor-dependent aPL, respectively. In the last few years, Dr. Müller-Calleja's group has succeeded in completely deciphering the signal transduction of lipid reactive aPL.
