Björn Dahlbäck, MD, PhD, professor emeritus at Department of Translational Medicine, Malmö, Lund University, Sweden.
MD (1974), PhD (1981) at Lund University, postdoc at Scripps LaJolla (1982-1983) and Greenberg visiting Scholar (1990) at OMRF, Oklahoma. A major research topic is the protein C system, focusing on factor V (FV)/FV-Short and protein S as cofactors to APC and TFPI. He described the first purification and characterization of human FV. He discovered: the protein S-C4b-binding protein complex, APC resistance (FVLeiden) as a major risk factor for thrombosis, the anticoagulant role of FV, the splice isoform FV-Short in East Texas bleeding disorder and its synergistic TFPI-cofactor activity with protein S. He has also made significant contributions to other fields such as the complement system and the lipoprotein metabolism (discovered apoM and its role in S1P metabolism). He has been Council Member and Treasurer of ISTH; is member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Science and honorary member of the ASH. He has published 341 original papers and 108 reviews, 43.000 citations; H-index 104. He received many awards, e.g. the Louis Jeantet Prix de Medicine, the Ham-Wasserman award, and distinguished career award ISTH.
