Fellow Physician
Children's Mercy Hospital
Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Thomas Cochran, MD is a fellow physician specializing in pediatric hematology and oncology at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in the United States. As an aspiring pediatric hematology/oncology physician, my long-term career interests include being a clinical and translational researcher. I developed an interest in clinical research during my time as a research associate in pediatric oncology prior to medical school. During that time, I coordinated a multi-institutional comprehensive review of the late cardiac effects of childhood cancer treatments. I continued my clinical research in pediatric residency evaluating the sensitivity/specificity and predictive value of whole-body MRI in the early detection of childhood neoplasia. I have continued to expand my clinical interest as a fellow physician performing a retrospective chart review to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency in children with an inherited bleeding disorder as well as a prospective pilot study with the aim to identify frailty in children with lymphoblastic leukemia or lymphoma. I have also designed and led a QI project during my fellowship with the aim to improve the use of incentive spirometry in our sickle cell patients to meet national guidelines in order to further prevent acute chest syndrome. As I expand my skillset in data analysis, grant writing, scientific presentations, and manuscript writing, I will build a strong foundation in clinical research in my career as a pediatric hematologist/oncologist in an academic setting.
