My name is Felix Hong, I am a biochemistry Master's student affiliated with the Centre of Blood Research (CBR) at the University of British Columbia (UBC). My work mainly focuses on understanding the molecular signaling mechanisms of platelet shape change and contraction in the context of hemostasis and thrombosis. Specifically, our lab works on an actin-binding protein called filamin A (FLNA), which can act as both a cytoskeletal stabilizer and as a scaffolding protein that relays signals between the platelet's plasma membrane and the actin cytoskeleton. My work suggests that FLNA is a critical player in regulating the intracellular signaling events that lead to platelet shape change and contraction.
