My name is Calvin van Kwawegen MD, and I am currently a PhD candidate at the department of Hematology at the Erasmus Medical Centre (Erasmus MC) in Rotterdam. After graduating from the study of medicine I have worked as a doctor on the Hematology ward and have thereafter taken up one of the research projects in this department. Currently I am the coordinator of the WiN and WiN Pro studies that are designed to perform broad spectrum research on Von Willebrand Disease in the Netherlands. Prof. Dr. F.W.G. Leebeek functions as the PI for our study and we work together with multiple Dutch research institutes and Haemophilia treatment centers.
The WiN study was performed in 2007 and has shed new light on Von Willebrand Disease in a large cohort of Dutch patients. Over the past two years, I have collaborated with my predecessor Dr. F. Atiq to set up the WiN Pro study as a prospective follow-up study to the WiN study. We did this in order to assess the current bleeding type of VWD patients. A large cohort of patients have participated in both studies, enabling us to longitudinally assess the development of their disease over the last 15 years. We also included a group of newly diagnosed VWD patients to further evaluate the Dutch population.
We hope to be able to elevate the level of knowledge on VWD over the next few years as a result of our studies.
