Dr. Rubens C. Costa-Filho is a highly accomplished physician with a degree in Medicine from the Souza Marques Technical Education Foundation (1981), an MBA in Marketing at FGV (2000), and an MBA in Business Management (2010). He was the founder and coordinator of the Intensive Care Hospital Pro Cardiaco in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 1987 to 2021, for 34 years. Dr. Costa-Filho is also a co-founder of the Latin American Institute of Sepsis (ILAS) (https://ilas.org.br/nossa-historia/) in 2004 and has held prestigious fellowships and memberships in various organizations, such as the American College of Chest Physicians (since 1993), Society of Critical Care Medicine (since March 1994), International Academy of Applied Hemostasis and Thrombosis (since 2004), Brazilian Association of Intensive Medicine (AMIB), Brazilian Society of Intensive Care (SOTIERJ), and the American Association for Respiratory Care. Dr. Costa-Filho is the founder and former president of the Institute of Great Themes in Medicine and Health (IGT) (https://vimeo.com/grandestemas), which aimed to develop a virtual platform offering numerous classes freely accessible to all academics and health professionals. Renowned professionals contributed by developing major debate topics on this platform. However, the Institute, a non-governmental educational organization, ceased operations at the onset of the pandemic.
From 2014 to 2021, Dr. Costa-Filho served as the Director of Trombocore, a rotational thromboelastometry service in the high complexity of Hospital Pro Cardiaco. He held this position from 2005 to 2015. His areas of specialization and study include Intensive Care, Sepsis, Hemostasis, Thrombosis, and Transfusion and Covid. Dr. Costa-Filho has been an effective member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis since December 2003. Dr. Costa-Filho is pursuing a Ph.D. at Fiocruz/IOC, which he began in 2021. He is researching Covid-19 in the Department of Tropical Medicine and working as a fellow in the Immunopharmacology laboratory.
