Research Fellow
University of Birmingham
Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
Gina Perrella is currently a post-doctoral fellow in the group of Dr Julie Rayes at the University of Birmingham. In 2014, she accomplished a biomedical science degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy and in 2016 she obtained a Masters’ degree in Medical Biotechnologies at the University of Siena in Italy. During her Masters’ degree, she also completed an internship at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht (The Netherlands) after obtaining an ERASMUS scholarship for trainees which gave her the opportunity to work in a new environment abroad and stimulated her to apply for a PhD position outside Italy.
In 2018, Gina Perrella started her PhD studentship as part of a joint doctoral program between the University of Birmingham (UK) and University of Maastricht (NL), under the supervision of Prof. Johan Heemskerk and Prof. Steve Watson and graduated in 2021. Her research was in the field of experimental thrombosis and hemostasis. The overall aim of her work was to investigate the relative contribution of fibrin(ogen) to thrombus growth and stability with particular interest in the role of the platelet GPVI receptor and the downstream signaling processes. The PhD has strengthened her interest in science and motivated her to pursue an academic career. In 2022, she joined the group of Dr Julie Rayes at the University of Birmingham as a postdoctoral fellow funded by a British Heart Foundation project grant. Her current work focuses on understanding the role of S100A8/A9 in chronic inflammatory diseases.
