Awital Bar Barroeta (MSc) has obtained her PhD at the Molecular Hematology department of Sanquin (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Her work focuses mainly on elucidating interactions between factor XI and its interaction partners in the coagulation cascade. To investigate the interaction between factor XI and thrombin she helped establish a FRET assay that could quantitate this interaction and potentially identify modulating agents. Moreover, she has used hydrogen deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX MS) to investigate the effect of factor XI activation on its structure and to map the interaction sites of factor IX or HK on factor XI. HDX MS was also used alongside a variety of biochemical assays to characterise a panel of nanobodies that effectively target factor XI. In this ISTH she will present her work that elucidates the interaction between thrombin and factor XI using crosslinking (XL) mass spectrometry.
