Professor; Head of Institute
Institut für Transfusionsmedizin, Universitätsmedizin Greifswald.
Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
Professor Andreas Greinacher received his M.D. from the Universities of Aachen and Würzburg, Germany. He specialized for transfusion medicine, immuno hematology and clinical immunology at the University Giessen, Germany. Since 1994 he has been the head of the department of transfusion medicine and the thrombosis and hemostasis service at the Universitätsmedizin Greifswald where he held a full professorship in transfusion medicine.
His major areas of research interest are hereditary and immune mediated thrombocytopenias, especially Platelet factor 4 mediated disorders, like heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and lately vaccine induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, and the application of nanotechnologies and biophysical methods to understand the molecular mechanisms of antigenicity of endogenous proteins. He has published more than 500 papers on these topics and contributed to many textbooks in thrombosis and hemostasis. He serves since many years as a member of several German national governmental and research boards on transfusion medicine and hemostasis, and contributed to national and international scientific societies including as a member of the ISTH Council (2010-2016). He has received numerous national and international awards for his scientific achievements, including the James Blundell Award of the British Blood Transfusion Society (2018); the Esteemed Career Award of the ISTH (2020); the Virchow Award of the Aktionsbündnis Thrombose (2021); the Award of the German Academic Medical Universities (2022); and the Award for Analytical Biochemistry (2022).
