Dr Jan Beyer-Westendorf is Head of Division "Thrombosis & Hemostasis" and leads the Thrombosis Research Unit at the Department of Medicine I, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, Germany, and serves as Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Technical University of Dresden. From 2016 - 2019 he has served as a senior lecturer in thrombosis and haemostasis at King’s College London, UK.
After completing his residency in internal medicine at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden in 2005, Dr Beyer-Westendorf went on to specialise in intensive care medicine, vascular medicine and thrombosis/haemostasis. His research interests mainly focus on venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation, anticoagulant therapies and bleeding management.
Dr Beyer-Westendorf has served on the steering committee of numerous clinical trials in cardiovascular medicine and has participated as Principal Investigator in phase II-IV trials evaluating the non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants. Since 2011 he runs a regional prospective registry looking at the efficacy, safety and management aspects of oral anticoagulants in daily practice, which currently has over 5000 enrolled patients.
Dr Beyer-Westendorf has authored or co-authored more than 200 well-received publications in peer-reviewed international journals, as well as many book chapters. He is a reviewer for several international journals, including the NEJM, Lancet, BMJ, Blood, European Heart Journal, JACC, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and Thrombosis Research.
