Vinod Vijayan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. His laboratory studies cellular signaling in health and disease with specific focus on serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) phosphatases in platelets and endothelial cells. The platelet signaling field is driven primarily by studies on protein kinases (serine/threonine or tyrosine), while the contribution of serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) phosphatases are relatively unexplored. Using conditional deletion of Ser/Thr phosphatases in platelets and identifying new phosphatase interacting proteins, the laboratory is uncovering interesting roles for platelet Ser/Thr phosphatases in cancer metastasis, thrombosis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The concepts emerging from these studies suggest that specific phosphatases, regulators of phosphatases and/or phosphatase interacting proteins that transport Ser/Thr phosphatases to a particular subcellular location could serve as potential targets for therapeutic interventions in cancer and thrombotic/ inflammatory disorders
