Semra Zuhal Birol, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol in the Bristol Platelet Group. She originally studied biology and improved her research in engineering by working on the design and fabrication of microfluidic systems. She's a bioengineer who works on platelet generation from megakaryocytes in a donor-independent way using a microfluidic platform that mimics the pulmonary capillary network. She's interested in developing 3D platforms in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by using MEMS technology, advanced biomaterials, and tissue engineering systems.
