Senior Lecturer
Imperial College London
London, England, United Kingdom
Dr Tom McKinnon is a senior lecturer at Imperial College London in the Centre for Haematology within the Dept. of Immunology and Inflammation. He obtained his PhD from Imperial College in 2007 under the supervision of Prof Mike Laffan and Prof James O'Donnell examing the role of glycosylation on the stucture and function of Von Willebrand Factor (VWF). Following on from a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Basic Science Fellowship, he became Senior lecturer in 2019.
Tom's research group is interested in the biology of VWF, in particular how Von Willebrands disease mutations alter VWF expression and function, investigating novel binding partners for VWF and how the C-terminal domains of VWF modulate its function.
Tom also runs the MSc Molecule Medicine course at Imperial and is always on the look out for guest speakers and encouages his students to participate in outreach programmes to raise public awareness of bleeding disorders.
