Dana Huskens, PhD, Research Project Leader at Synapse, was born in Flanders and studied at KU Leuven. After a master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, she defended her doctoral thesis in 2010 with a research topic on HIV inhibitors in the early stages of infection. She continued with a 3-year post-doc at the same university, specialising in the same field, studying the mechanisms of action and development of resistance of HIV inhibitors. On joining the Synapse Research Institute in the Netherlands in 2013, she left her native Belgium (and HIV) behind to focus on thrombin generation. Her first project concerned the optimisation and clinical validation of a method for measuring thrombin in whole blood. She is now involved in various fields of research on new tests relating to platelet function, plasmin generation, fibrin degradation products and von Willebrand factor.
