Chief of Cardiology
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Charles J. Lowenstein, MD is the Michel Mirowski MD Professor of Cardiology, Chief of Cardiology, and Co-Director of the Heart & Vascular Institute at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was formerly Professor of Medicine, Chief of Cardiology, and Director of the Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center where he held the Paul N. Yu Professorship in Cardiology.
Dr. Lowenstein has a distinguished career in vascular biology and thrombosis research. Dr. Lowenstein’s research team collaborates with genetic epidemiologists to use genetic studies of humans to identify novel genetic loci linked to vascular inflammation and thrombosis, and then develops cellular and animal models to characterize candidate genes. This approach of combining genetic epidemiology and functional biology has led to discoveries of novel thrombotic pathways in humans. Recent work has focused on epigenetic regulators of thrombosis based on newly discovered human mutations.
Dr. Lowenstein’s research program has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association (AHA), and industry grants. He has led a training grant funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Dr. Lowenstein is a member of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation, the American Heart Association (AHA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), the Association of Professors of Cardiology (APC), and the Association of University Cardiologists (AUC).
