    Background: Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is a serious, frequent and preventable medical complication in the hospitalized patient and in the three month period following hospitalization. Although the efficacy of its prevention has been demonstrated, compliance is variable.

    Aims: To study compliance to pharmacological thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized patients at the Hospital de Clínicas and to report the incidence of VTE three months after hospitalization.

    Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study of all medical-surgical patients and patients with obstetric illness hospitalized in moderate care wards in the Hospital de Clínicas, between July 21-23, 2022. Padua and Caprini scores and RCOG guidelines were used to determine the percentage of patients at risk of VTE and the percentage receiving pharmacological thromboprophylaxis was assessed. We followed the evolution of this group for 3 months after hospitalisation. This is study stems from of a larger multicentric study of 31 centres, but the other centres did not follow their patients.

    Results: In the multicentric study 1925 patients were included which corresponds to 26% of the hospital beds in the country. 214 belonged to the Centro Hospital de Clínicas: 67.8%(145) medical, 26.8%(57) surgical, 5.6%(12) obstetric patients.
    77.6%(166) were at risk. 78.6%(114) of the medical, 86%(49) of the surgical and 33.3%(4) of the obstetric patients had indication for thromboprophylaxis.
    65.8%(110) of the patients at risk were receiving pharmacological thromboprophylaxis. 10.2%(17) were anticoagulated, 12%(20) had contraindications and 12%(20) did not received. Thus, 76%(127) of the patients were "protected" for VTE (thromboprophylaxis plus anticoagulated).
    Of the 47 medical patients who had no indication for thromboprophylaxis, 17(36.2%) were receiving it.
    At three months, three patients with cancer had VTE (1 DVT, 1 PE, 1 likely PE). All 3, had received thromboprophylaxis during hospitalization.

    Conclusion(s): 76 % of patients at risk were protected for VTE, however 12% did not receive it. Education is necessary to improve compliance.
