Background: Etiopathogenesis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and arterial thrombosis is associated with inherited and/or acquired risk factors. However, there are many unresolved issues. In some of the patients, despite the co-existence of several prothrombotic risk factors, the thrombotic episode does not occur. On the contrary, in some persons, thromboembolic event can be diagnosed without known provoking factor.

Aims: To detect the influence of inherited and acquired risk factors on the development of arterial and venous thrombosis and pregnancy complications

Methods: In this study, we included patients followed up at the National Center of Hemostasis and Thrombosis during 1 representative year. In them, we evaluated demographic (age, sex, blood group, localization of thrombosis) and also hemostatic data including the prevalence of thrombophilia.

Results: Thromboembolism was most frequently diagnosed in the age group 35-55 years (44%). The most prevalent form of thromboembolism was deep venous thrombosis (42.6%), followed by pulmonary embolism (22%) and pregnancy complications related to thrombosis (7.4%). Generally, thromboembolic complication was more commonly diagnosed in women (59.5%) than in men.

The composition of thrombophilic states in the studied population is revealed in Table 1.

Conclusion(s): The results of this study might be useful for the prevention of thromboembolism in the risky populations.

The study complies with the Declaration of Helsinki and from each patient, the informed consent was obtained. The study was approved by a recognized medical Ethics Committee.
