Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent disease, Guidelines recommend ambulatory management for patients with DVT and selected patients with PE. AP-HP is a group of 38 hospitals welcoming more than one million hospitalized patients per year.

Aims: To describe care pathway of patients diagnosed with VTE in emergency departments (ED) of AP-HP over the period 2018-2019.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the exhaustive discharge database (PMSI) from Clinical Data Warehouse of Greater Paris University Hospitals (EDS AP-HP), natively including the routine care data of 13 million patients.
The stays were selected according to the following criteria: (1) start date between January 01, 2018 and January 01, 2020, first admitted in an ED, (2) medico-administrative data including a VTE code as primary, related or associated diagnosis. The data were extracted, cleaned and analyzed on a JupiterLab interface using R and Python languages.

Results: Overall, 9120 hospital stays including a VTE code for patients firstly admitted via ED were recorded. The characteristics of patients are reported in Table 1. The hospital care pathways of patients diagnosed with VTE or PE in ED (7290 stays) are displayed on Sankey diagram (Figure 1). Median hospital stay duration is about 8 days. Patients with VTE diagnosed in ED are most often referred to internal medicine, short-stay hospitalization unit and cardiovascular departments.

Conclusion(s): Most of patients admitted in ED with a VTE diagnosis have a median 8-days duration. Guidelines about ambulatory management of patients with DVT and PE should be disseminated and implemented.
