Stefano Barco, MD, is staff physician, head of research and of the outpatient clinic at the Department of Angiology of the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, and a visiting scientist of the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis in Mainz, Germany. He completed a residency in internal medicine (FMH) at the University of Pavia, Italy, a PhD in vascular medicine at the University of Amsterdam, NL, and a residency in vascular medicine (FMH) at the University of Zurich.
He is active in the care of patients with arterial and venous disorders, including interventional endovascular treatments, and teaches classes at the undergraduate and graduate level at different institutions.
His primary research interest is in the management of venous thromboembolism. His projects have been funded by the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds and by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung in Deutschland. He has written or co-authored more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 110 original works.
He is a member of the World Thrombosis Day steering committee, in the nucleus of the European Society of Cardiology "Working Group on Pulmonary Circulation and Right Ventricular Function", co-chair of the ISTH subcommittee "Factor XI and the Contact System", and a member of the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measures for VTE.
Dr. Barco is the recipient of the 2022 Swiss Angiology Society Award, 2021 Scientist Award of the Walter and Gertrud Siegenthaler Foundation, 2021 Bayer Thrombosis Prize, and 2014 Bonizzoni Award (Ferrata-Storti Foundation), as well as of the GTH, ESC, SISET, and ISTH Early Career Awards.
He serves as Associate Editor for "Thrombosis Research", "Haemostaseologie", and "VASA-European Journal of Vascular Medicine", and as Editorial Board Member for the "Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis".
