Professor Omolade Augustina Awodu FNAMed, MBChB, MD, FMCPath
Professor Omolade Awodu is a Professor of Haematology at the School of Medicine, University of Benin, and a Consultant Haematologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Her clinical and research focus is to deepen the understanding of thrombotic disorders (blood clots) and bleeding disorders (Thrombosis and Haemostasis) thereby fostering their diagnosis and treatment as well as generating research interest in this field in West Africa. Prof Awodu’s work on lupus anticoagulant generated interest in the antiphospholipid antibodies in the West African sub-region.
She has trained and mentored several Haematologists.
Prof. Awodu has chaired and participated in the development of guidelines for the management of venous thromboembolism, management of Haemophilia and management of venous thromboembolism in obstetrics and gynaecology in Nigeria.
She is the Chair of the thrombosis and haemostasis group of the Nigeria Society for Haematology and director of the South-South Haemophilia treatment centre (HTC) in Nigeria. She has also served in other capacities including past Head of Department of Haematology and Assistant Dean of the School of Medicine, University of Benin.
She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Nigerian Journal of Haematology
Prof. Awodu is an elected member of the council of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH)
She had, in the past successfully organised essential meetings in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis through the Nigerian Society for Haematology in collaboration with ISTH.
She is the Vice President/President-elect of the Nigeria Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion. She is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine
