Professor
Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT, Nationwide Children's Hospital
Columbus, Ohio, United States
Dr. Kerlin is a Professor of Pediatric Hematology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Director of The Joan Fellowship in Pediatric Hemostasis-Thrombosis, Director of the Blood Disease Research Affinity Group, and a Principal Investigator in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. After training in both clinical and research laboratories, he took a 10-year hiatus from laboratory research to support my family. During those years, he honed his clinical care, epidemiology, and clinical research skillsets. He then leveraged his epidemiologic observations, institutional support, and an NIH-defined pathway to Re-Enter Biomedical Research. Using these mechanisms, he successfully competed for an NIH Re-Entry Supplement and its competitive renewal. Using preliminary data generated with this important NIH support, he was able to successfully compete for an NIH K08 Career Development Award to pursue training in glomerular biology and coagulation signaling. He has subsequently published his observations and research findings in high-impact hematology and nephrology journals, presented his work at (inter)national meetings in both the hematology and nephrology fields (American Society of Nephrology, International Podocyte Meeting, American Society of Hematology, and International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis), and successfully competed for independent NIH awards. His lab continues to pursue the discovery of biomarkers and mechanisms underlying pediatric thrombosis with a focus on kidney disease-related thrombosis risk factors.
