Prof. Dr. med. Berend Isermann is currently head of the Institute of laboratory medicine, clinical chemistry and molecular diagnostics at Leipzig University. Berend Isermann studied medicine in Würzburg, Bristol (England) and New Haven, CT, USA. After medical internship (Heidelberg University Clinic), he spent 5 years as a researcher in Milwaukee, WI, USA at the Blood Research Institute. Back in Heidelberg, he received specialist training in internal medicine, endocrinology and laboratory medicine, as well as qualifications as a diabetologist (DDG) and clinical chemist (DGKL, German society of laboratory medicine). In 2011 he was appointed to the W3 professorship for laboratory medicine at the University of Magdeburg, in 2019 he was appointed to the W3 professorship for laboratory medicine at the University of Leipzig. His research focuses on coagulation protease dependent signaling in vascular disease in the context of life-style associated diseases. Among others, he studies mechanisms through which coagulation proteases regulate cellular homeostasis and thus organ function and regeneration.
