Andrea Croft RGN, Dip HE, BSc, MSc, Lead Advanced Nurse practitioner Anticoagulation trained as a state enrolled nurse in the Royal Air Force. Following a break working abroad she returned to the UK and undertook Project 2000 qualifying as a registered nurse in 1995. She inherited the management of the warfarin clinic at Bridgend General Hospital, where she developed a career long interest in Anticoagulation.
Since 2002 Andrea has pioneered and championed the need to manage hospitalised patients appropriately keeping them safe from the associated risks of developing a Hospital Acquired Thrombosis (HAT). Combining her specific interest in VTE prevention with her passion and enthusiasm for all things anticoagulation Andrea has travelled around the world sharing good practice and networking with similar minded colleagues.
In 2015 three hospital sites under Andrea’s leadership were recognised as the first Thrombosis Exemplar Centres in Wales.
Andrea holds the position of deputy chair of the All Wales Hospital Acquired Thrombosis Steering Group where she has been instrumental in aligning the 7 health boards in Wales to adopt a collective approach to HAT prevention on a national scale. She is also Wales Nurse Director for the charity Thrombosis UK. Being a trustee for Thrombosis UK has allowed Andrea the opportunity to spread the VTE prevention message far and wide.
Andrea was a coordinator participating in the ENDORSE study, she was recognised as a Thrombosis leader of the future in 2002, she has also been recognised for innovative practice and as the judges choice at the Annual Anticoagulation Awards in London 2018. Lyn Brown MP commented, “This is a truly remarkable professional who ensures patients entering this service can be confident that their safety and care is best served by the leadership demonstrated to maintain VTE exemplary standards.”
