Dr. Evi X. Stavrou is the Oscar D. Ratnoff Professor of Medicine and Hematology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Staff Hematologist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. She received her MD degree summa cum laude from Semmelweis University, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University-Sinai program and Hematology-Oncology fellowship at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.
The principal research focus of the Stavrou lab is on the Factor XII – uPAR interactome and neutrophil cell biology in health and disease. Previously published work identified that FXII and its receptor uPAR upregulate neutrophil functions and promote pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic responses. Ongoing research encompasses the mechanistic elucidation of zymogen FXII functions, mapping the FXII-uPAR interaction, and identifying the mediators through which the FXII-uPAR signaling axis influences neutrophil behavior. Utilizing this knowledge, the goal is to understand how FXII-uPAR influence neutrophil interactions in tissue microenvironments and then on creating novel pharmacologic strategies to mitigate progression of disease. Main research interests in the lab are in i) structural biochemical characterization of protein-protein interactions, ii) microfluidic design and development to study neutrophil functions and thrombus characteristics, iii) small molecule development to selectively abrogate FXII-mediated responses, and iv) disease-targeted drug delivery systems. Disease states of interest include chronic, non-healing diabetic wounds, deep vein thrombosis, and ovarian cancer progression. Work from the Stavrou lab has been published in premier journals including Blood, Nature Communications, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, and the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Dr. Stavrou’s work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, and the VA Research & Education Foundation. She serves as associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Hematology and Thrombosis Research, is co-Chair of the Publications Committee for the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Research Society and an active member ISTH SSC Sub-Committees.
