Research Scientist
The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital

A Research Scientist in the Center for Clinical and Translational Research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio), Amanda Waller (PhD) comes from an interdisciplinary research background. She received her PhD in comparative physiology from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, in 2009, with her graduate research focusing on muscle substrate utilization and metabolism during exercise and recovery. She subsequently packed her bags for the USA to complete a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at The Ohio State University, where she examined the effects of insulin resistance on glucose metabolism using both small and large animal models. One of her favourite projects during this time involved use of a novel photolabeling method to study the activity of cell surface glucose transporters in the intact heart, which earned her an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship award. She arrived at Nationwide Children’s in 2013, excited to continue the translational scientist path as the first employee of Dr Bryce Kerlin’s new laboratory, where they are studying the unique interplay between pathophysiologic blood coagulation and glomerular kidney disease. Outside the lab Dr. Waller can be found at the stables, where she enjoys (most days) being trained by her feisty off-the-track Thoroughbred, Grizzly.
