Cengiz Akbulut (he/him), is a stem cell researcher at the Department of Biochemistry, CARIM and head of the newly established Stem Cell Research University Maastricht (SCRUM), FHML, Maastricht University. In 2013 Cengiz obtained a BSc in Biochemistry with Biobusiness from the University of Aberdeen. He completed his MSc in Regenerative Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London in 2015, before working as a research assistant in the William Harvey Heart Center, Charterhouse Square. In 2017, Cengiz moved to Maastricht University as a Marie-Curie Fellow to work towards a PhD. As part of his doctoral program Cengiz received formal training at Uniklinikum Aachen, Uniklinikum Bonn and Cambridge University, in addition to an industrial internship at NattoPharma. Cengiz’s primary research is based around vascular smooth muscle cell plasticity in disease. Currently his research incorporates stem cell biology, biochemistry, molecular, and developmental biology with the aim of developing next-generation regenerative medicine solutions to tackle cardiovascular disease.
