Ilaria De Simone is PhD student at the department of Biochemistry at Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Maastricht University (Maastricht, The Netherlands), as well as at the institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research (ICMR) at the University of Reading (Reading, United Kingdom) under the supervision of Paola van der Meijden, Chris Jones, Jonathan Gibbins and Hugo ten Cate. The PhD project is a joint doctorate between Maastricht university and University of Reading and is part of the ITN Marie- Sklodowska-Curie Horizon 2020 research programme TAPAS (TArgeting Platelet Adhesion receptors in thrombosiS). During her PhD, she mainly focuses on novel mechanisms of platelet activation and sustained signalling through the receptors GPVI and PAR1. As part of the ITN program, she also had the chance to visit the Semmelweis University (Hungary, Budapest). Before her PhD, she attended the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, where she studied Biomedical Sciences and where she obtained a master’s degree in basic and translational sciences.
