Jacob Rand is Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Clinical Chief of Coagulation Testing at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, USA. A graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he trained in Pathology (Montefiore Hospital) Internal Medicine (Mount Sinai), and Hematology plus post-doctoral research (Montefiore). He then joined the Hematology faculty at Mount Sinai where he taught, had a clinical practice, directed the Hematology and Coagulation Laboratories, and grew an externally funded research program (including AHA, NIH and DOD), that focused on the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and von Willebrand factor (vWF). Dr. Rand continued his work at Montefiore/Albert Einstein where he was Professor of Pathology, Medicine and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s’ Health before moving to Weill Cornell.
Dr. Rand’s research team’s contributions on APS include localization of annexin A5 (AnxA5) on the apical surfaces of placental syncytiotrophoblasts, describing antibody-mediated disruption of AnxA5 crystallization in the pathogenesis of APS, development of a translational assay for detecting that mechanism, evidence that hydroxychloroquine dissociates APS immune complexes, imaging of APS immune complexes, and development of a novel assay for detecting complement activation in APS. His team’s contributions on vWF include the identification and functional characterization of of type VI collagen as a subendothelial binding site for vWF. Dr. Rand has contributed to >100 scientific articles and multiple textbook chapters. He is a longtime member of ISTH where he has made frequent presentations and previously served as co-chair of the Lupus Anticoagulant/Antiphospholipid and vWF subcommittees.
